The rest of the operation was carried out using four 767s, two 757s, and eight Israeli Air Force 707s. This operation took place in May 1991. In a record-breaking airlift, the Israeli Air Force, aided by El Al, brought 14,000 Ethiopian Jews from Addis Ababa to Israel within 33 hours just days before the capital fell to rebel troops. The top-secret "Operation Solomon" began on 24 May 1991 when an air force C-130 Hercules brought the first group of high-ranking Israeli officers and experts to Addis Ababa International Airport. The airlift was completed a few hours before the first rebel units reached the airport area. The 747 flight set the record for most people on a plane – a record that it still holds to this day. A Boeing 747-200C (4X-AXF) was the first aircraft to depart on the rescue operation, lifting off from Tel Aviv at 12:58 PM on Friday, the 24th. Previously used for cargo, the 747 had been converted to passenger configuration within 24 hours. By using a 29in (74cm) pitch, and having no galleys and only four toilets, no less than 760 seats were installed.
